First Blog Post

Your optional Blog post  is due TUESDAY, APRIL 16th, 2013 at 11:59PM. You will get feedback for this post and then may use the post for your first assignment, Blog #1. It's a great way to find out how to make your first blog a success.


Before you start, READ THROUGH THE ASSIGNMENT GUIDE CAREFULLY.

Your Blog #1 is due TUESDAY, APRIL 23rd, 2013 at 11:59PM.

Here are some prompts to help get you started...

Prompts:
1. Social Factors. Discuss the idea of a "social factor". What is a social factor? How is it different than a psychological, genetic or biological factor?
2. Social Epidemiology and Race. Describe what the study of social epidemiology or demography is. Give an example of a disease that exerts different risks for different racial/ethnic groups.
3. Gender and Health. Explain how gender can impact health, citing a specific example of a health behavior, disease, attitude, etc. that differs for men vs women.
4. Medical Sociology & Jobs. First, describe what medical sociology is. Then, cite an example of how it relates to jobs by visiting a professional/health organization website (hint: social context, cultural competency, disease prevention are central aspects of medical sociology-google them!).

Guide for Blog Posts:
1. Choose a theory, concept or idea that we have discussed in class, or that closely relates to class material, citing an academic source (like a textook or JOURNAL article).
2. Select an example to illustrate the concept, or support/refute the theory. This may be a statistic, video, song, news piece, book, personal experience, local story, interview, etc.
3. Provide at least one “discussion question” to provoke classmate’s responses
4. Comment on a classmate's post if possible

Rubric for Blog Posts:
1. Mentions a relevant theory, concept or idea with proper citation (i.e. your textbook)
2. Gives a coherent explanation/example that shows comprehension of chosen topic
3. Free of major grammatical errors and offensive remarks
4. AT LEAST one academic reference/study or statistical summary from a credible website
